This desk was designed and made based on the availability of off-cuts of some beautiful ash timber. The idea was to try to reduce the waste from the making process by finding an alternative use for timber left over from previous jobs.

Long, reinforced mitre joints make up the construction of the main desk body. Working with the timber’s defects, natural shakes or splits have either been stabilised or celebrated. The front of the drawer was carved by hand, creating a subtle contrast between the drawer front and the main frame of the desk.

One of the beauties of working with solid timber is in being able to create texture and variation across the surface; showing the marks of the tool as they interact with the grain of the wood. This carving really draws attention to the ripple effect present in this particular tree.
